CHOU PETTE: THE FABULOUS FELINE MUSE OF KARL LAGERFELD

Some cats live ordinary lives.
And then there was Choupette.
With her fluffy cream-colored coat, enormous blue eyes and unmistakably regal expression, Choupette became one of the most famous cats in the world.
But she wasn't simply an internet-famous pet.
Choupette belonged to legendary fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, and during their years together she became his companion, his muse and a celebrity in her own right.
Her life included private jets, professional photo shoots, beauty collaborations, personal caretakers and meals served in a manner considerably more sophisticated than the average cat's dinner bowl.
In other words, Choupette was fabulous.
And I absolutely love her story.

WHO IS CHOUPETTE?
Choupette is a Birman, a beautiful breed known for its blue eyes, silky coat and pointed coloring.
Her relationship with Karl Lagerfeld began almost accidentally.
Choupette originally belonged to French model Baptiste Giabiconi. Lagerfeld looked after her while Giabiconi was traveling, and apparently the arrangement worked a little too well.
Lagerfeld fell in love with her.
Choupette ultimately remained with him, and an extraordinary relationship began.
The story has been widely recounted in fashion coverage of Lagerfeld's life, including accounts published after his death.

THE CAT WHO STOLE KARL LAGERFELD'S HEART
Karl Lagerfeld wasn't exactly known for being sentimental.
He cultivated an instantly recognizable public image: dark sunglasses, white hair pulled into a ponytail, high collars and fingerless gloves.
Behind closed doors, however, Choupette apparently had him completely wrapped around her little paw.
She lived with Lagerfeld in Paris and became a constant presence in his private life. In one of his later interviews about his home, Lagerfeld casually described the enormous studio-like space where he read, sketched — and where Choupette lived with him.
For someone who famously valued his privacy and independence, his attachment to this little cat was rather sweet.
He spoke about her frequently in interviews, and the fashion world became fascinated with her.

A VERY, VERY PAMPERED CAT
Calling Choupette spoiled might be an understatement.
Reports about her lifestyle became almost legendary.
She had caretakers. She traveled with Lagerfeld. She was photographed professionally. And according to people who actually knew her, she didn't simply eat her dinner from a bowl sitting on the kitchen floor.
Vogue reported in 2014 that Choupette had two nannies and did not eat from the floor.
Even some of the objects associated with her eventually became pieces of fashion history. When Lagerfeld's belongings were prepared for auction after his death, Vogue noted that the collection included the dishes from which Choupette had been served her food.
I can't help but appreciate a cat with her own tableware.

FROM PET TO FASHION MUSE
Choupette didn't remain simply Karl Lagerfeld's beloved pet.
She became part of his creative world.
Perhaps the perfect example came in 2014, when Japanese cosmetics company Shu Uemura created a holiday makeup collection inspired by her.
The collaboration was called Shupette.
Yes, a cat inspired an actual beauty collection.
The products and promotional world surrounding the collection transformed Choupette into a glamorous feline beauty muse, complete with Lagerfeld's own illustrations.
For a cat lover who also loves makeup and fashion, it really doesn't get much better than that.

CHOUPETTE BECOMES A CELEBRITY
Before long, Choupette had developed a public identity completely separate from simply being "Karl Lagerfeld's cat."
She appeared in fashion photography and advertising and even became the subject of a book.
She accumulated a huge following online.
Fashion magazines wrote about her.
Brands wanted to work with her.
And the combination was irresistible: one of the world's most famous fashion designers paired with an extraordinarily photogenic blue-eyed cat who seemed perfectly comfortable with luxury.
She wasn't just accompanying Lagerfeld's glamorous life.
She had become part of the mythology surrounding it.

DID CHOUPETTE REALLY INHERIT KARL LAGERFELD'S FORTUNE?
This is probably the most famous Choupette story of all.
After Lagerfeld died in 2019, rumors circulated that Choupette had inherited an enormous fortune from him.
You'll still see headlines describing her as one of the richest cats in the world.
The reality is considerably less clear.
The idea that Choupette inherited Lagerfeld's fortune has been widely reported as a rumor rather than an established fact. Even Vogue, when discussing her in connection with the 2023 Met Gala, described her as having been rumored to inherit his wealth.
So while it's fun to imagine Choupette sitting in a Paris apartment reviewing her investment portfolio between naps, I wouldn't treat the enormous-inheritance stories as confirmed fact.
She did, however, become commercially successful in her own right through appearances and collaborations during Lagerfeld's lifetime.

LIFE AFTER KARL
Karl Lagerfeld died on February 19, 2019.
The fashion world lost one of its most influential figures, but there was also an immediate question among Choupette's many fans:
What would happen to his beloved cat?
She continued to be cared for after his death and remained an enduring symbol of the more personal side of Lagerfeld's extraordinary life.
When the fashion world gathered in Paris for Lagerfeld's memorial, Choupette was represented in the celebration. Cara Delevingne participated in a tribute specifically honoring Lagerfeld's love for his Birman companion.

CHOUPETTE TAKES OVER THE MET GALA
Then came one of my favorite chapters.
The 2023 Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute exhibition celebrated Karl Lagerfeld's extraordinary career.
Naturally, Choupette couldn't be ignored.
At the accompanying Met Gala, several celebrities interpreted Lagerfeld's famous cat in spectacular fashion.
Doja Cat transformed herself into a glamorous feline-inspired version of Choupette.
Jared Leto went in a considerably less subtle direction and arrived wearing an enormous furry cat costume.
Lil Nas X also incorporated feline imagery into his look.
Among all the couture gowns and Lagerfeld references, somehow the cat managed to steal the show. Again.

WHY I LOVE CHOUPETTE'S STORY
Of course I love looking at Choupette because she is beautiful.
But that's not really why I find her story so charming.
What I love is what she seems to reveal about the relationship people can have with animals.
Karl Lagerfeld inhabited an extraordinary world of couture, photography, art, books, celebrities and luxury.
He worked with some of the most beautiful and famous people in the world.
And yet, when he went home, there was a fluffy blue-eyed cat waiting for him.
Vogue's accounts of his later years describe Choupette living alongside him among his books and the tools of his work.
There is something wonderfully human about that.
Cats don't care how important you are.
They don't care which celebrities you know, what you're wearing or whether the rest of the world thinks you're a genius.
To your cat, you're simply their person.
Maybe that's part of what made Choupette so special to Karl Lagerfeld.
And perhaps that's also why, after all the fashion collections, photographs, runway shows and extravagant stories, people still remember the great designer and his beautiful little cat.
Choupette wasn't merely an accessory to his fabulous life.
She was family.
And in true Choupette fashion, she became an icon along the way.

WHY DO RAGDOLL KITTENS CHANGE COLOR AS THEY GROW?
One of the most fascinating things about raising Ragdoll kittens is watching their colors develop.
A newborn Ragdoll can look almost completely white, yet a few weeks later, little hints of color begin appearing on the ears, nose and tail. As the kitten continues to grow, those markings become darker and more defined.
By adulthood, that nearly white baby may look completely different.
So why does this happen?

IT STARTS WITH TEMPERATURE
The beautiful pointed coloring seen in Ragdolls is caused by a temperature-sensitive form of pigmentation.
The gene involved affects an enzyme that helps produce melanin, the pigment responsible for color. The enzyme works more effectively in cooler areas of the body and is less active in warmer areas.
That is why a pointed cat develops its darkest coloring on the cooler parts of its body, particularly the ears, face, paws and tail.
The warmer center of the body remains much lighter.
This same fascinating phenomenon occurs in several other pointed breeds and varieties, including Siamese, Himalayan and Birman cats.

WHY ARE RAGDOLL KITTENS BORN SO LIGHT?
Before birth, kittens are surrounded by the warmth of their mother's body.
Because they develop in such a consistently warm environment, very little of their future point color is visible when they are born.
Ragdoll kittens therefore enter the world looking white or extremely pale.
Then they experience the cooler temperatures outside their mother's body.
That's when the transformation begins.

THE FIRST LITTLE HINTS OF COLOR
Within the first several days and weeks, a breeder may begin noticing tiny changes.
The edges of the ears may darken first.
A little color may appear around the nose.
The tail begins developing pigment.
Then the paws and face gradually become more defined.
Watching this happen is one of my favorite parts of raising Ragdoll kittens. A litter of tiny pale babies slowly begins revealing what each kitten is going to look like.
And sometimes they surprise you!

SEAL, BLUE, CHOCOLATE AND LILAC
Ragdolls can occur in several beautiful colors.
Seal Ragdolls develop rich, dark brown points. Their coloring can eventually become quite dramatic against their lighter bodies.
Blue Ragdolls have softer, cool gray points rather than brown.
Chocolate is a warmer and lighter brown than seal, while lilac is a very pale, delicate grayish color.
Other colors are also found in Ragdolls, including red and cream.
The color you see in a young kitten is not necessarily the color you will see when that kitten is fully mature.

COLOR AND PATTERN ARE NOT THE SAME THING
This can be confusing when someone is first learning about Ragdolls.
A Ragdoll has both a color and a pattern.
For example, a kitten might be a seal point, a seal mitted or a seal bicolor.
Seal describes the color.
Colorpoint, mitted and bicolor describe how that color and the white areas are distributed across the cat.
This is why two seal Ragdolls can look very different from one another.

WHAT ABOUT BICOLOR RAGDOLLS?
Bicolor Ragdolls are especially striking because portions of the cat remain white while the point coloring develops around them.
The classic inverted white "V" on the face is one of the most recognizable Ragdoll looks.
As a bicolor kitten grows and its point color deepens, the contrast between the colored areas and white areas can become increasingly dramatic.
A tiny kitten who initially looks like a little white puffball can eventually become a gorgeous adult with clearly defined markings.

RAGDOLLS KEEP CHANGING FOR A LONG TIME
Ragdolls are a slow-maturing breed.
Their appearance doesn't stop changing when they leave kittenhood.
Color can continue developing and deepening as the cat matures, and the body itself may gradually become darker with age.
Their coat also becomes fuller and more impressive as they grow.
That means the little Ragdoll kitten you bring home is really just the beginning.
You get to watch the finished cat slowly appear over the next several years.

CAN TEMPERATURE ACTUALLY AFFECT THEIR COLOR?
Yes, to a degree.
Because the pigmentation responsible for pointed coloring is temperature sensitive, cooler areas tend to become darker.
This is also why the extremities of the cat are naturally darkest.
Age, genetics and other biological factors influence the final appearance too, so temperature isn't the only thing determining how a Ragdoll will look.
Still, the connection between temperature and pigmentation is one of the most interesting things about pointed cats.

WHY YOUR KITTEN MAY NOT LOOK EXACTLY LIKE ITS ADULT PHOTOS
People sometimes choose a Ragdoll kitten because they fall in love with its incredibly pale baby appearance.
It's important to understand that those colors will develop.
A seal point kitten, for example, will not remain a nearly white kitten with barely visible markings forever.
Its mask, ears, legs and tail will become much more noticeable.
The body may deepen in color as well.
This isn't the kitten changing into something unexpected.
It's the kitten growing into the Ragdoll it was genetically designed to become.

I've watched many Ragdoll kittens grow, and I still find the transformation fascinating.
When they're tiny, you find yourself studying little ears and noses, looking for the first hints of color.
Then the markings start appearing.
Faces change. Masks develop. Tails darken. Blue eyes become even more striking against the developing points.
Every kitten seems to reveal itself a little at a time.
Maybe that's part of what makes raising Ragdolls so much fun.
You don't get to see the finished picture immediately.
You get to watch it appear.
And it all begins with one tiny, nearly white kitten.

​The Remarkable Story of Ann Baker & the Ragdoll Cat

Today, the Ragdoll is one of the most recognizable and beloved cat breeds in the world. With their beautiful blue eyes, soft coats, large size, and famously gentle personalities, it’s hard to imagine a time when Ragdolls didn’t exist. But every breed has a beginning.
The story of the Ragdoll begins in California in the 1960s with a woman named Ann Baker and a white longhaired cat named Josephine.
And what happened next became one of the most fascinating stories in the history of pedigreed cats.

It all started with Josephine. Ann Baker was a cat breeder living in Riverside, California, when she became interested in the kittens produced by a white domestic longhaired cat named Josephine.
Josephine wasn’t a Ragdoll. There were no Ragdolls yet. She was simply a white longhaired cat who became the foundation of something completely new.

Ann noticed qualities in Josephine’s descendants that she found particularly appealing. She began selectively breeding cats from these lines, choosing for characteristics such as a gentle temperament, large size, beautiful coats and an affectionate nature. Over time, those choices began producing a recognizable type of cat. The Ragdoll was taking shape.

Meet the Original Ragdoll Family:

Several cats appear again and again in the early history of the Ragdoll.
Among the most important were Daddy Warbucks, a seal point mitted male, and Blackie, a solid black cat.
Josephine’s daughters Fugianna and Buckwheat also became extremely important to Ann’s breeding program.
Daddy Warbucks was bred to Fugianna and Buckwheat, and these early combinations became part of the foundation from which the Ragdoll breed developed. It’s remarkable to think about today.

Millions of people have fallen in love with Ragdolls, yet their story can be traced back to a very small group of cats and one breeder who saw something in them that she believed was worth preserving.

Why Are They Called Ragdolls?

The unusual name is part of the breed’s charm.
Ann Baker described her cats as being exceptionally relaxed when handled, with some becoming so comfortable in a person’s arms that they seemed to go limp — almost like a child’s rag doll.
And so the name Ragdoll was born.
Modern Ragdolls are individuals, of course, and not every Ragdoll literally goes limp when picked up. But the affectionate, easygoing temperament that attracted people to the early cats remains one of the qualities for which the breed is loved today.

Ann Baker Did Things Her Own Way

This is where the history becomes especially interesting.
Ann wasn’t content simply to create a new type of cat and hand its future over to the established cat fancy.
She wanted to maintain control over the breed she had developed.
She established her own organization, the International Ragdoll Cat Association (IRCA), and eventually developed an unusual franchise-style system for people who wanted to breed her cats.
She even obtained a trademark for the name Ragdoll.
That was an extraordinarily unusual approach to cat breeding.
Breeders working within Ann’s system were expected to follow her rules, and the arrangement eventually became a source of disagreement between Ann and some of the people who had purchased her cats.

The Ragdoll Goes Its Own Way
Two people who became especially important in the next chapter were Denny and Laura Dayton of Blossom-Time Cattery.
The Daytons purchased their first breeding pair from Ann Baker in 1969.
They and other early breeders wanted Ragdolls to participate more fully in the traditional cat fancy. They wanted to show their cats, work with established associations and pursue broader recognition for the breed.
Ann had a very different vision.
Eventually, the two paths separated.
The Daytons and other dedicated breeders continued developing and promoting Ragdolls outside Ann’s system. Their work was tremendously important in bringing the breed into mainstream cat associations and helping establish the Ragdoll we recognize today.
The familiar colorpoint, mitted and bicolor patterns became part of the developing Ragdoll standard.
Decades later, the Cat Fanciers’ Association accepted Ragdolls for registration in 1993 and granted the breed championship status in 2000.

The Facts — and the Legends

No story about Ann Baker would be complete without mentioning that some very unusual stories became attached to the early Ragdolls.
Ann told a story that Josephine had once been struck by a car and subsequently received medical treatment. She later claimed that something associated with Josephine’s treatment had somehow altered her genetics and resulted in kittens with the unusually relaxed personalities associated with the Ragdoll.
Over the years, even more extraordinary stories became associated with the cats.
These claims have become an interesting part of Ragdoll folklore, but they shouldn’t be confused with established genetics.
What we do know is fascinating enough.
Ann Baker recognized desirable characteristics in a group of cats and selectively bred generation after generation to reproduce those qualities.

That is how the Ragdoll began.

A Woman With a VisionAnn Baker could certainly be controversial.
She was independent, unconventional and fiercely protective of what she had created. Her determination to control the Ragdoll eventually caused serious disagreements with other breeders.
But there is another part of her story that I find inspiring.

She noticed.

Among ordinary cats, she saw something that other people might have overlooked.
She saw certain physical characteristics and personality traits and imagined what they could become if carefully bred forward.
Then she actually did it.
There was no established Ragdoll breed for Ann to follow. There was no Ragdoll standard waiting for her.

She was creating something new.

From One White Cat to a Beloved BreedThat’s perhaps my favorite part of the entire story.
It began with Josephine.

One white longhaired cat.

From Josephine and her descendants came Daddy Warbucks, Fugianna, Buckwheat and the other cats that formed the beginnings of Ann Baker’s breeding program.
From those beginnings came generations of breeders who refined, preserved and promoted the Ragdoll.
Today, people all over the world immediately recognize that beautiful combination of blue eyes, pointed coloring, plush fur and sweet expression.
That’s quite a legacy for one little white cat — and for the woman who recognized that her kittens might be something special.

Why Ann Baker’s Story Still Inspires Me

As a breeder, this is the part of Ragdoll history that stays with me.
Creating a breed doesn’t necessarily begin with knowing exactly what the finished result will look like. Sometimes it begins because someone pays close enough attention to notice something unusual or wonderful.
Maybe it’s a coat unlike anything you’ve seen before.
Maybe it’s a particular look, personality, texture or characteristic that unexpectedly appears in a litter.
Most people might simply say: “What an unusual kitten.”
A breeder might look at that same kitten and wonder: What if?
What if that characteristic could be preserved?
What if it could be developed responsibly over generations?
What if this little kitten represented the beginning of something entirely new?
Whatever one thinks about all of Ann Baker’s methods or some of the extraordinary claims she made, I admire that original spark of imagination.
She saw something special.
And she followed it.
More than half a century later, the Ragdoll is her remarkable legacy.

The best choice simply depends on what you're looking for in a companion. Let's take a closer look at the differences.

Because Ragdolls mature slowly, they often continue filling out until they are around three to four years old.

Now, growing up, it was always "the Lion shall lay down with the lamb", but you know, ...Mandela effect. They are even messing with the Holy Word of God.
I am certain it used to say LION. I even remember working in a sewing factory in my early twenties, and I gave my supervisor a Christmas gift. It was a little ceramic figurine of a lion and a lamb laying together, that I had bought at Kirklands. I'm pretty sure Isaiah 11:6 was engraved along the bottom. It wasn't a figurine of a "wolf" and a lamb. No. No. I remember it vividly only because my supervisor ran away from me when I reached out with my gift to give it to her. She kept saying No No No. I was confused, until some co-worker told me that the supervisor was Jehovah Witness and did not celebrate Christmas. Eeek. I was so embarassed. So, anyways, all that to say I remember (the lion and the lamb were supposed to lay together) ...so vividly. So you see. There are animals in heaven, and there is proof in the Bible. If you have lost a pet, I honestly believe you will see them again if you are a Christian and going to heaven when you die. Does anyone else believe that? I do. 100%.
